Running Ubuntu Linux without GUI

Remove all the entries in
/etc/X11/default-display-manager file.

Now, reboot your machine, it automatically boots without GUI(Without starting X server).
If you want to start the X server, just give

#gdm

dude I tried this in 11.04 and now I can't login. I amended the /etc/X11/default... file to the original /usr/sbin/gdm and still no dice. I can however boot the low graphic recovery gui, yet for some reason i can't get networking. Any advice?

just Ctrl-Alt F1 -- will get you to the terminal window. You can move from there on...
